Placing mental health front and center for the next generation of hospitality professionals

The Burnt Chef Project has been able to not only allocate funds to its new free-to-use modules to colleges initiative but also continue to expand it with these new modules

Following the successful launch of a new mental health initiative that provides free-to-use modules to colleges, The Burnt Chef Project has announced four additional modules to the series. Thanks to donations from the virtual fundraiser, the Bourdain Challenge held last year, and other global fundraising efforts, The Burnt Chef Project has been able to not only allocate funds to this new initiative but also continue to expand it with these new modules.

Designed for colleges teaching the hospitality professionals of tomorrow, the free-to-access modules have been specifically designed to build the resilience and perseverance of students. Helping form effective coping skills for young people who are finding their way into the world of work, the modules have been devised in a way that offers content in easy-to-digest formats which complement topics from their courses. Covering topics including discrimination and equality, budgeting, tax and pensions, recognising stress, planning and time management, gambling, drugs and alcohol and of course, mental health stigma, the college modules are written in handy bite-sized sections, making them easy to absorb and learn around a formal college course.

The modules available include:

  • Drugs & Alcohol
  • Equality and Diversity in the Hospitality Industry
  • Why Mental Health Matters
  • Why Sleep Matters
  • Equality and Diversity in Everyday Life
  • Financial Health
  • Personal Change Management
  • Personal Stress Management
  • Setting and Achieving Personal Goals
  • Understanding Gambling
  • Understanding the Term ‘Mental Health’

Each module delivers an overview of the relevant topic, delving into key issues and defining the signs and symptoms of mental health-related stress associated with it. Providing college tutors and their students with a range of tools and handy tips, the modules support individuals in recognizing mental health challenges in themselves and their peers.

Free-to-use basis

“We’ve been working on the college module program for several years, but thanks to the incredible fundraising totals achieved by the Bourdain Challenge last year, we’re at a position where our program has now expanded from seven initial modules to eleven, and we are providing them to colleges across the world, on a free-to-use basis,” says Kris Hall, founder and CEO of The Burnt Chef Project.

“Our aim with these modules is to support the next generation of hospitality professionals, by helping them enter the industry with greater resilience. Focusing on upskilling students, our Burnt Chef Project college modules allow the future talent of our industry to better cope with everyday stresses while also being equipped with the knowledge and a deeper understanding of several crucial life skills.”
